Indal workers' unions welcome court verdict

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Indal Workers' Association and the Indal Employees' Organisation have welcomed a court verdict that annulled the second long-term settlement at the extrusion unit of Hindalco (formerly Indal), at Alupuram.

Vice-presidents of the association and the organisation K. Krishnankutty and P. R. Socrates respectively, said in a press release here that the long-term settlement was annulled on Tuesday and that the matter was referred to the Industrial Tribunal in Alappuzha for an early settlement.

Workers at the aluminium company, under the aegis of these two trade unions burst firecrackers and distributed sweets to celebrate their legal victory, said the press release. The trade union leaders later met to decide on a future course of action.

The press release claimed that the annulled settlement was signed by the Aluminium Company Workers' Union even as protest action was on to press for a long-term settlement. The period of the first agreement ended on June 30, 2002. Workers had started an indefinite protest action on July 1, 2004 after negotiations failed to produce a second long-term settlement.

However, the Aluminium Company Workers' Union reached an agreement with the company management and withdrew from the strike action on November 23, 2004, claimed the press release.
