The Hindu and Saregama India will institute ‘The Hindu Saregama M.S. Subbulakshmi Award' at a function titled ‘Remembering MS Amma' here on September 15.
The award, in the name of the legendary musician, will be presented annually to a promising Carnatic vocalist.
A jury comprising eminent musicians and art critics will select the recipient based on the artist's performances during the year, particularly those during the ‘Marghazhi music season'.
In addition to getting a tambura specially-designed for the honour, the awardee will have an opportunity to cut an album for the Saregama. He or she will be given the opportunity to give four concerts in different cities, over a year, and also perform on radio and television.
Saregama India Managing Director Apurv Nagpal said non-film music needed a push from everyone in the music industry's eco system. “The institution of this award is a small step in that direction.” The award was also a tribute to the queen of Carnatic music, who continued to inspire awe among listeners across the world, he said. If her soulful voice transported listeners to a world of bliss, her personality and affection touched many.
“Her albums are always among our top five best-sellers all over the country. Her music transcends all barriers,” Mr. Nagpal said.
The award institution ceremony would also feature the launch of a special album brought out by the Saregama, ‘M.S.Subbulakshmi sings to Tirupati Lord Balaji,' a compilation of the vocalist's remarkable renditions. The former West Bengal Governor, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, will be the guest of honour. V. Dhanalakshmi of RmKv Silks will offer felicitations.
