To create a workforce of GST-trained students and professionals, Chennai-based Shrimathi Devkunvar Nanalal Bhatt Vaishnav College (SDNB) for Women, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Chamber of Indirect Tax Professionals to promote industry-integrated learning. This is the first college in India to start a certificate course in Goods and Service Tax (GST).

Dr. V. Varalakshmi, college principal, says, “The objective of the programme is to develop the conceptual and practical skills of B.Com students and expose them to the application of knowledge in business firms and organisations. This will allow them to become self-dependent and easily employable.”

Excerpts from an interview with C.A. Rajendra Kumar, course director for the new offering.

Crux of the course

It provides an opportunity for college-goers to equip themselves with GST knowledge. After course completion and appearing in a simple objective-type examination, students will be given a certificate by International Chamber of Indirect Tax Professionals, a not-for-profit company incorporated under The Companies Act, and the only organisation in India exclusively dedicated to indirect taxes. The objective of the course is to make students employable immediately after graduation, and to bridge the gap between theory and practice in tax laws.

Those who are in their third year of undergraduate studies are eligible to apply for this 60-hour course which involves classroom training with practical exposure to various aspects of GST.

Topics covered

Basic concepts of GST, registration, filing of returns, place and time of supply, valuation, maintenance of accounts and records, classification, exemptions, basics of filing of appeals, and more will be covered. Apart from theory, there will be live demonstrations of the procedures for registration, filling various forms connected thereto, and filing of returns.

Employment opportunities

Upon course completion, students can be employed by chartered accountant offices, or similar establishments. Placement assistance will be provided by the International Chamber of Indirect Tax Professionals.
