The Aam Aadmi Party looked set to form government in Delhi, sweeping to power with an unprecedented win of over 50 seats in the 70-seat legislative assembly.
The fledgling party did better than even exit polls, which had predicted an AAP victory, had projected. By 9.30 am, official Election Commission statistics gave the party 50 out of 59 seats for which leads were being counted, seven to the BJP and one each to the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal. Unofficial leads gave the party close to 55 seats.
AAP chief ministerial candidate Arvind Kejriwal led in his seat, New Delhi, while both the BJP and Congress CM candidates were trailing. Kiran Bedi, the BJP’s late entrant CM candidate, was trailing in Krishna Nagar, a stronghold of MP Harsh Vardhan and considered a safe seat for the party.
Prominent AAP leaders including Manish Sisodia, Somnath Bharti and Rakhi Bidlan led in their seats.
