I want to appear for the UGC-NET scheduled for 2013 and 2014. I have completed PG in History by campus education but I did my degree course under the correspondence mode. Will this be an issue? What are the books to be read for the examination?

via email, Bangalore

By now you would have had a look at the History syllabi of the UGC-NET. If you have not yet seen the syllabi, it is available on the following hyperlink http://www.ugc.ac.in/inside/syllabus.html. You can start your preparation even before the notification for December 2013 is issued. In the area of history and archaeology, the best source of information in Bangalore is the Mythic Library on Nrupathunga Road.

The UGC-NET does not expect the student to be theoretical, it expects the student to be in the knowhow of the pertinent aspects, and one should also know how the issues are to be put in a perspective. Some of the important books that should be part of the reading material:

The Wonder that was India Volume I, AL Basham

The Wonder that was India Volume II, SAA Rizvi

The History of India Volume I, Romila Thapar

The History of India Volume II, Percival Spear

An Advanced History of India, RC Majumdar, HC Raychaudhuri and Kalikinkar Datta

You should also read the history books prescribed for the 10th, 11th and 12th CBSE students for they take you to the fundamentals of the dynamics of history and the syllabi that is covered in the UGC-NET.

Distance education should not be an issue, as you have already pursued Master’s on a regular basis admission for which was sought on the basis of your achievements in the degree course.
