There’s never a dearth for entertainment on weekends in Bangalore much like there is never a scarcity of DJs and bands who tour the city. This weekend, Indigo Live presents World’s top DJ, Grammy Nominee and Producer Tommy Trash, featuring Nikhil Chinapa and Rohit Barker. The Australian DJ, record producer, and remixer, who mainly working on the Electro house genre, is excited about being in India. In a telephonic interaction, Tommy says: “I expect the show to be really good as I’ve heard that India and Bangalore in particular, is high on energy. And those who come to watch me play can expect to listen to a good deal of my own music.”
Having started out quite early in life, the DJ says: “Over the years I’ve gotten a lot better than I used to be. Sound wise too, I’ve come a long way. When I listen to the old stuff I’ve made, it’s almost as if I’m looking at photos of me as a baby! I realise how much more refined my signature sound is now. Getting feedback is what really helps you get better at your job. My music today has matured.”
Known to be an untypical DJ in terms of his approach to music, he says: “It’s important to be yourself. That’s the challenge. And why be anyone else when you can be you? I believe you can’t people please your way through life. That has always been my approach towards music and life itself.” Speaking of what sets him apart in a world where there are newer DJs and producers everyday, Tommy says: “I love experimenting. I never offer the same thing twice. From synths and sounds, I try, tweak, change, sit down on the laptop- keep some music that sounds good and happily delete what doesn’t.”
About his music writing process, the DJ says: “When I’m working on remixes, I always keep something from the original that I like the most or that I feel holds the song together and I take it from there. When it comes to my own stuff, I have a melody and then I work on it. DJ Tommy Trash is inspired by artistes like Axwell, Eric Prydz, etc. He says: “They make such cool records and in a field like this it’s good to try to emulate another’s sound but to grow you need to develop your own.” His most memorable collaboration so far has been with Swedish DJ and producer Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia fame. “It was surreal. I’ve always been a fan of his music and then I got to play with him.”
Looking ahead, he’s working on his next single that’ll make it to his album. Following his tour in India, he will be performing at Mexico and Australia before he heads to New York to ring in the New Year.
DJ Tommy Trash will be playing at 6.30 p.m. today at Geoffrey’s Lawns, Royal Orchid Hotel, Old Airport Road. For tickets log onto www.bookmyshow.com
