‘Relief granted with stringent conditions’

A Delhi court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Karti Chidambaram’s chartered accountant (CA) S. Bhaskararaman in the cheating-cum-corruption case connected to INX Media in which Mr. Chidambaram is also an accused.

The court had earlier ordered his release on bail in the money laundering case connected with the case.

Granting bail, Special Judge Sunil Rana said: “In my opinion the relief of anticipatory bail can be granted to the applicant with stringent conditions. In the event of arrest, applicant S. Bhaskararaman be admitted to bail on furnishing a personal bond for ₹2 lakh with one surety of the like amount.”

“It is worthwhile to mention here that the main accused [Mr. Chidambaram] has already been granted bail by the Delhi High Court... in the matter. Applicant S. Bhaskararaman was earlier granted bail in the case of Enforcement Directorate... and in compliance with the conditions he has already surrendered his passport to the Enforcement Directorate,” the judge said in his order.

Opposing his bail plea, counsel for the CBI submitted that the applicant had to make out a special case for grant of anticipatory bail. As he had failed to make out one, his application was liable to be dismissed.
