After a six-month stay, the water board will finally begin works on the Krishna Phase-3 project at Prashasan Nagar after the High Court vacated the order. The development is a major relief to around 20 lakh people in the west of the city, who would be supplied water through the project.
Since February, works on the 724-metre pipeline was stalled after local residents at Prashasan Nagar moved the High Court objecting to rock blasting undertaken by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). “We tried to explain to them the importance of the work, and even told them we would not cause damage,” mentioned an official, requesting anonymity.
However, as the case dragged on, so did the work. Now, after vacation of the stay, the official said that the works would be completed by the end of the month, and that the entire 90 million gallons per day (MGD) of supply from the Krishna Phase-3 project would be supplied by the first week of November.
Once completed, the HMWSSB will be able to supply drinking water to households at Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Kukatpally, Serilingampally and surrounding areas. As of now, 45 MGD is being supplied from the Krishna Phase-3 project since early this year. After completion of pipeline works at Prashasan Nagar, the total 90 MGD will increase the water supply to the city by more than 40 MGD.
The HMWSSB official said that the 45 MGD coming from the Krishna Phase-3 project to the city is being supplied to the old city and periphery areas like Mailardevpally. Apart from this, the other project awaiting completion is the Godavari Phase-1 project, which is expected to supply about 170 MGD to the city.
