The City Police have launched a probe into the June 27 mishap at the Ernakulam South railway station when a loco engine rolled from the yard line towards the main operation track.
According to officials, officers from the Central Police Station have visited the spot and collected statements of railway employees on a complaint lodged by the Ernakulam Area Manager. The complaint was lodged upon finding that the skid used to stop engines from rolling downwards was removed, which led to the engine rolling down the track. “The traction is uneven and hence it is mandatory to place the skids. We suspect some miscreants from outside might have removed them,’’ officials said. On June 27, an electric engine stationed at the Ernakulam South station began to roll and moved towards the mainline leading to the North station. However, it was halted just metres away from the busy line after hitting the ‘Trap Point’, a safety device fitted on tracks for diversion. Meanwhile, a internal inquiry being conducted by the Railways into the incident would be over in two days.
