In anticipation of heavy vehicular movement in the city in the run up to Deepavali , police and transport department have decided to put in place a series of measures to reduce congestion at central bus stand.
Four spots have been identified for setting up temporary bus stands near the central bus stand from where long-distance buses and those proceeding to neighbouring districts are currently being operated. The spots are: Vestry School Ground, Periamilaguparai (near K.A.P.Viswanatham Medical College), additional entry point to Tiruchi Railway Junction (along Bharathiar Salai) and eastern side of Khadi Kraft (close to Junction Roundabout).
Except buses bound for Chennai, Salem, Dindigul and Palani, which would be operated as usual, following changes have been effected for buses to other destinations.Vestry School Ground will be the temporary stand for buses for Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Karur.
These buses will have to come via MGR statue junction to reach the spot and return in the same route.
Periyamilaguparai is meant for buses for Madurai, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari.
The buses will have to come via Mannarpuram, Viralimalai Junction, Aristo Roundabout, and Gorimedu to reach Periyamilaguparai. The second additional entry for Tiruchi railway junction will act as the temporary bus stand for buses for Thanjavur. These buses will come via TVS Tollgate and Head Post Office Junction to the spot and return in the same direction.
Buses meant for Pudukottai will have to come via TVS Tollgate, Head Post Office junction to reach the eastern side of Khadi Kraft. Buses from Chennai and Salem will reach Central Bus Stand via TVS Tollgate, Head Post Office Junction, Junction Roundabout and V.O.C. Road. In the return direction, these buses will go via Williams Road, Mutharaiyar Statue Junction, Head Post Office Junction and TVS Tollgate.
Buses from Dindigul and Palani will reach Central Bus Stand via police check post-1, Karumandapam, Gorimedu, Aristo Roundabout and V.O.C. Road. In the return direction, these vehicles will go via Rajaji Salai, Periamilaguparai, Gorimedu, Karumandapam and police check post -1.
The temporary regulation will be in operation from October 31 to November 4.
PARKING AT MILITARY GROUND: The military ground at Mannarpuram is earmarked for parking government buses from other divisions and private and omni buses. They would have come to the bus stand at the scheduled time to pick up passengers.
Government buses could also park their vehicles at the respective depots on times when they are not operated. Parking of buses at temporary bus stands would not be allowed, say police sources.
OMNI BUSES: Omni buses in limited numbers would be allowed to be parked along the V.O.C. Road beyond Gate-3 of Central Bus Stand. The other vehicles will have to be parked at Mannarpuram military ground. After taking in passengers, these vehicles will have to go via Roshan Mahal, Collector Office Road, and Vestry School Junction.
TOWN BUSES: Town buses will be operated on their usual routes within the city.
Temporary mobile toilets and water drums for supplying drinking water would be set up at the temporary bus stands. Flex boards guiding passengers and buses on temporary bus stands would be installed at different places near the central bus stand and announcements would be made through public address system on the changes, a senior police official said.
