Amidst scores of compulsive smart phone surfers, this 18-year-old Intermediate teenager comes as a whiff of fresh air for he believes in out-of-the-box thinking and doing things differently.

Meet Kante Vinay Kumar of Narayana Junior College (NAID campus), who is gradually making a name for himself for manufacturing miniature workable objects. His aim is to graduate as a mechanical engineer and plunge into manufacturing.

First he manufactured a one inch mixie while at Class X and two years later he gave shape to a five centimetre high refrigerator. His brush with science was when he displayed his bio gas plant in a district-level science fair which won him many accolades.

Vinay hails from a lower middle class family and his father Phanibhushana Rao works in Sri Durga Malleswaraswamy varla Devasthanam. “My mother Malleswari is my inspiration. She always supports me. Thanks to Narayana management which gave me a concession of Rs. 50,000 during my two-years of stay,” says Vinay, who is now preparing for engineering entrance.

A diehard science buff Vinay always ponders over physics theories to give shape to novel ideas.

Vinay used lamination sheet, three LED bulbs, vibrator, tail blades of a toy helicopter, gas connecting pipe, a bit of wood and a liberal dose of adhesive to manufacture a cute little refrigerator, which works by electricity.

“I used a 3.7 volts charger portal to convert the power to help three bulbs and vibrator to work. Tetrafluoroethane gas was used to give the cooling effect. To gain first hand knowledge, I interacted with refrigeration professionals for two days”.

Earlier, Vinay, using coke tin metal sheet, pen nib, phone vibrator, wrist watch battery, mosquito bat switch and stapler pins ‘manufactured’ a mini mixie, which functioned out of battery power. “This feat of mine has found a mention in the Telugu Book of Records and it took one week for me to complete the project.”

Vinay claims that his refrigerator is the smallest in the world. “I checked the websites. I think I have made the smallest fridge,” said the beaming creator.

Vinay has already set his sight on his next project — (i.e.) producing power. “There will be great demand for electricity in the future. I know the ways and means of producing it but I gave no money to put the project to action. All I need is an alternator (dynamo motor), 12 volts D/C motor, power distribution board and a 12-volts battery to generate power,” says the former student of Rajasthan English Medium High School.
