In a shocking incident, an unidentified person made a vain bid to sell a three-month-old baby boy for Rs. 2,500 at the Vijayawada railway station on Monday. The sanitation staff who noticed this alerted the police and the government officials, who rescued the baby.

According to information, the man was seen with the baby at the railway station at around 5 a.m. and was heard asking a few persons on the platform, if they were interested in buying the baby.

The staff who watched him for a while, questioned him about the baby’s mother.

When he gave incoherent replies, they alerted the Government Railway Police (GRP), who informed the Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) officials.

According to GRP Circle Inspector T. Srinivas Reddy, the man was a vagabond who was loitering around the station.

Baby healthy

“We are not sure if the baby was his or was abandoned by someone else at the station. As the person was in an inebriated state and not giving any coherent replies, we are trying to get more details from him,” the CI said.

Meanwhile, District Child Protection Officer Ch. Vijay Kumar said the baby was healthy and was shifted to the government hospital by child protection officer Y. Johnson and outreach worker G. Prema Latha.

“The baby was not fed for hours. When it started crying we requested a woman to feed the baby, who did the needful,” Mr. Johnson said.

“The baby will be shifted to the government-run Sishu Gruha. Based on the District Probation Officer (DPO), Police and WD&CW inquiries, we will hand over the baby to the biological parents,” said Krishna District WD&CW Project Director K. Krishna Kumari.
