To promote the use of nature-friendly figurines during Ganesh Chaturthi, a couple of NGOs and schools are teaming up to contribute their bit to society.

Combining an awareness drive and a free distribution programme, Pollocks School is all set to give away 1,000 eco-friendly Ganesh idols on September 16 at Sampath Vinayagar temple, Asilmetta, between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

The programme, to be held in association with Rotary Club Vizag Couples, aims at protecting environment from marine pollution caused due to immersion of chemical-based idols.

Adding value to the green initiative, Gayatri Vidya Parishad MLB Trust School, East Point Colony, is presenting a clay-moulding workshop on Monday at its campus from 10 a.m. Children can just walk into the premises and bring out their own moulds using material supplied free of cost by the school staff. To advocate the use of clay-based idols, Yo Yo Youngistaan, an NGO, is taking up ‘Go Green Ganesha’ campaign for the second consecutive year. In line with the drive, the representatives of the organisation have launched door-delivery concept of water-soluble idols at a nominal price. One can either visit www.yoyoyoungistaan.strikingly.com or contact 8688645691 or 9666212370 or 9059195860 to place an order. Based on the information provided, a Ganesh idol will be delivered to the mentioned address at Rs.15. “Last year, we delivered over 700 idols and this year, we intend to cross this score.

The focus is to do our bit to environment by creating awareness on the positive impact of celebrating the festival with eco-friendly idols,” explains R. Deepak Vamsi, founder-director of Green School Project.

Online campaign

Apart from educating schoolchildren on the ill-effects of idols made of Plaster of Paris, Ken Foundation, a voluntary organisation, is keen on administering pledge against investing in PoP idols to the students through its online signature campaign ‘Pledge to Go Green Ganesha’.

‘Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with clay-based idol and protect environment’ as its theme, Swathi Promoters Private Limited distributed a total of 1,500 clay-based idols at their temporary outlet facilitated on the Beach Road on Sunday. Chairman of the company M. Krishna Reddy, managing director M. Ramesh Reddy and executive director M. Suresh Reddy, among others took part in the programme.

The team will head to various areas across the city to carry out the free distribution programme.
