Highlighting that the earth has limited resources that are depleting alarmingly, Visakhapatnam Rural Superintendent of Police Rahul Dev Sharma has said that the scarce means must be utilised judiciously to meet the ends.
Speaking to students during a plantation drive jointly undertaken by The Hindu and the Essar Group at the Chandrampalem Zilla Parishad High School near Madhurawada marking the World Environment Day, the SP said efforts must be put in to ensure that that the spent resources was replenished to maintain a healthy environmental balance.
Deliberating on this year’s theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, Mr. Rahul said, “Rampant use of plastic has dangerous repercussions. Apart from being non-biodegradable, plastic has toxic properties which is detrimental to the public health in the long run.
Climate change
Appreciating the efforts of The Hindu and the Essar Group in creating awareness among students, he said, “We are entering a very dangerous phase of climate change and awareness plays an important role here.”
Highlighting the aspects of climate change, Mr. Rahul elaborated on the recent trends of thunderstorm and dust storm activities across the country. “We have never experienced such adverse climatic parameters in the past. This shows that the effects of climate change are quite palpable,” he said.
Earlier, M. Lakshmi, a Class X student, who won the elocution award, spoke about climate change and the importance of World Environment Day.
The Hindu and the Essar Group have been organising the plantation drive on the occasion for the last few years to create awareness on how to safeguard the environment. D.S. Varma of the Essar Group and former police officer and social activist TSR Prasad also spoke on the occasion.
Prizes were given away to the students who won in the essay and elocution competitions.
