HAL’s Kanpur unit gets DGCA’s upkeep nod

Updated - March 18, 2015 05:33 am IST - BENGALURU:

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has approved Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.’s Transport Division at Kanpur as a full-fledged maintenance and repair centre for Dornier and Avro aircraft.

HAL, which manufactures military aircraft for the IAF, said the move gives a boost to its small and growing civil aviation business.

HAL Chairman T. Suvarna Raju was quoted as saying that the Kanpur division obtained the approval after rigorous audit by the DGCA. Its staff took up related DGCA-approved courses and acquired type-rated licences to maintain airframe, engine and avionics. HAL has so far produced 125 Dornier (Do-228) and 89 Avro (HS-748) planes. The Government of Mauritius recently signed a contract to acquire HAL made Dornier aircraft for maritime surveillance to guard its extensive coastline.
