If all goes according to plan, female students in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s schools and pre-university colleges will have to wear salwar kameez as uniforms.
The BBMP Standing Committee for Education recently voted to introduce this change, with the proposal only awaiting the formal approval from the mayor.
“Most students in BBMP schools use public transport and whenever any of our officials went for inspection, the students usually asked for this change, saying skirts and blouses made them uncomfortable. And that it would make them feel safer, especially when they are on the streets,” said K. Nagabhushan, the committee’s chairman.
He said this time, the women councillors in the committee had brought up the issue as a priority.
“We have received many complaints about eve-teasing on the streets and (we feel) that the change in dress code would go a long way in reducing the problem,” a woman councillor said.
There are 33 high schools and 12 pre-university colleges run by the BBMP across the city. As of now, PUCs do not have uniform requirements but this too is likely to change with the committee deciding on salwar kameez as the dress code for at least students of Class 8 and upwards.
