In a country where the film industry is rapidly expanding, Adutha Kattam , a small Malaysian film produced and directed by Malaysian Tamils promises a lot for the future. Released in Malaysia in December last year to favourable reviews, Adutha Kattam now releases in theatres in Tamil Nadu.
This thriller set on the long-winding highways of Malaysia uses all the tried and tested devices of the genre. Adutha Kattam is the story of Rekha (Malar Meni Perumal), who decides to leave her husband and drive to her mother’s house in Bahau. Her car breaks down on the highway and she tries to escape from a psychopathic rapist. The film ends with Rekha killing him. “We know that the film has its faults, but these are early days for the local film industry,” says Navaneethan Ganeson, producer of Adutha Kattam . While there are prominent Malaysian-born filmmakers ( The Conjuring fame James Wan) and animation experts, the local film industry is still at a very nascent stage.
“Not more than 15 films were being made in Malaysia. But with the support of the Malaysian government, in 2012 about 70 films were produced of which two were Tamil,” says Ganeson.
“The market is small, therefore we cannot pump in a lot of money to get expert technicians,” he adds.
With a massively developed market in Tamil Nadu, Malaysian Tamil films have a lot to gain.
