The railway police, on Sunday, destroyed a huge quantity of tobacco products seized from a long-distance train at Chengalpattu.
During a routine check by the patrol teams of Railway Protection Force (RPF), 24 gunny bags were found in one of the sleeper coaches of Sampark Kranti Express, on Friday evening.
On inspection, the policemen realised banned tobacco products were being smuggled in the packed bags.
They were unloaded and kept at the station and Chengalpattu municipal officials were informed about it.
The bags were later taken to the municipality’s compost yard and set on fire on Sunday morning. Further investigations are on to establish the identity of the people who despatched the bags and the intended recipients, said an RPF officer.
