Haribabu (40), a contract labourer with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), died on Saturday evening after he fell from a height of six feet at a Metrorail work site near Cement Road junction in Alandur.

According to CMRL sources, the mishap occurred while Haribabu was carrying out a task related to signalling work. He was working on a section of the stretch from Little Mount to Airport that is expected to go operational in a few months.

Police sources said that he lost his footing and fell, and his stomach was pierced by iron rods. He was pulled out of the mess of metal and rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital. Efforts to revive him went in vain, the police said.

The St. Thomas Police registered a case and conducted a preliminary investigation at the spot, said a senior police official.
