A protest was held here on Friday against film lyricist Vairamuthu's recent remarks on Andal.
The protest was organised by the Tamilnadu Bramins Association at Mylapore, and several prominent Hindu leaders and scholars joined it.
They condemned the speech of Mr. Vairamuthu, saying it insulted Hindu belief and culture.
Vaishnavite scholar M.A. Venkatakrishnan said, “Mr. Vairamuthu deliberately uttered damaging words on Andal, who has been revered for centuries. We will not rest until he tenders an unconditional apology at the Srivilliputhur Temple.”
S. Vedantam, senior leader of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, said Alwars and Nayanmars contributed a lot to Tamil language and literature. “Andal pasurams, written 1,000 years ago, are still chanted by many.”
Another Vaishnavite scholar Ananda Padmanabhacharya, said, “The State government should withdraw all awards given to Mr. Vairamuthu since he insulted Andal, whose temple gopuram is the emblem of Tamil Nadu. We will intensify the agitation until he tenders an apology.”
