Ahead of the proposed launch of a choice based credit system (CBCS) from the next academic year, the University Grants Commission has set up a facilitation cell.
In a letter to vice-chancellors and directors of universities, UGC chairman Ved Prakash favoured the setting up of a working group of senior faculty members to develop a time-bound action plan for the implementation of CBCS and the adoption of credit framework for skill development (CFSD).
The letter follows a meeting held on Tuesday with Education Ministers and senior bureaucrats with the Union Minister for HRD, Smriti Irani.
Mr. Prakash has sought the “personal intervention” of the V-Cs and speedy action to address issues such as semesterisation of curricula; restructure of syllabi in the form of modules and standardisation of examinations.
The UGC had formulated guidelines to facilitate the implementation of the CBCS, which universities “may use as base material and adopt or adapt as they deem fit.” The Commission had also developed a scheme for the introduction of CBCS in skill-based vocational courses. These guidelines could be accessed from the UGC website, Mr. Prakash said.
