Karkkidakam is a month of rejuvenation in Kerala. With the rain restricting movement, a good number of people opt for the traditional Karkkidaka Chikitsa during the month.

A public health awareness programme was organised by the State Department of Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM) on Thursday to educate the people about the scientific basis of the rejuvenation therapies in the month of Karkkidakam.

The programme was inaugurated by district panchayat president Kanathil Jameela. District Medical Officer (Ayurveda) M.V. Saly presided over the function.

Classes by experts

It comprised classes by experts on topics such as Rejuvenation therapies during Karkkidakam, Contagious diseases prevalent during monsoon, Domestic medicines and Lifestyle diseases. A quiz was conducted for students of high schools in the district on the topic ‘Ayurveda and Health’.

Exhibition

The students of KMCT Ayurveda College organised an exhibition on Thursday on various medicinal plants and the basic principles of Ayurveda. The exhibition featured tips on what to do and what not to do during Karkkidakam, including consumption of medicines.

It highlighted the importance of proper bath, food, applying oil, exercise, clothes and personal hygiene and also offered tips on how to deal with simple diseases such as common cold, fever and cough.

Medicinal coffee as well as various pamphlets on the lifestyle to be followed during Karkkidakam were distributed at the venue.

The programme was co-organised by the Ayurveda Medical Association of India and the KMCT Ayurveda College, Manasseri.
