Women these days are suffering from an insecurity created by a combination of male chauvinism and consumer culture, writer Khadeeja Mumtaz has said.
Inaugurating a seminar on ‘‘Women’s Security: Challenges and solutions’’ organised by the Sthree Surakhsa Samithi here on Friday, she said that excelling in career alone was not the indicator for women’s freedom.
Ms. Mumtaz said it was saddening to note that women still had to be kept track of by men, even if it was for their protection.
TemporaryThe government machinery and laws for the protection of women were temporary, she said.
Laws could do nothing to raise the self-esteem and personality of women.
Ineffective lawsSocial activist Rajalakshmi, who presided over the seminar, expressed her anxiety over the ineffectiveness of the laws meant for the protection of women.
Ms. Rajalakshmi called for a constant vigil of the philanthropic community to ensure that the laws were being followed.
The seminar was part of a conference on women’s safety. An exhibition on ‘Women power’ was also held at the Town Hall.
A street play ‘Lookout Notice — Oru Padaprashnam’ by Rangachethana, Thrissur, was staged.
A delegates’ convention will be held at the Sports Council Hall at 10 a.m. on Saturday, which will be inaugurated by Additional District Judge Cheriyan K. Kuriakose. A public convention will be held at 4 p.m.
