Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG to resume on Nov. 15

Scheme started in 2013, but later stopped

The Union government is set to recommence the Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG (DBTL) scheme from November 15 in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The erstwhile Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government launched the DBTL scheme on June 1, 2013 in 18 districts including the Union Territory of Puducherry. However due to opposition from political parties and some sections of public, the implementation of scheme was stopped after some time.

The scheme envisages that amount of subsidy is transferred to consumer’s bank account directly and he can buy the products at market price. The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas launched these initiatives in order to reform the current system of delivery of subsidised products.

A top official said, “The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has sent a communication to government and other authorities for the implementation from November 15.”

Oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have informed their dealers of the recommencement of DBTL.

Another official added that 95 per ent of LPG consumers have linked their Aadhar cards with bank accounts.

According to data available, 11,45,076 Aadhaars have been generated which is 92 per cent of the total population. In respect of Puducherry region, the total Aadhaars generated are 9,25,323 which is 98 per cent of the total population. E-Aadhaar facilities are provided through Common Service Centres.

Enrolment centres

With a view to maximising the Aadhaar enrolment, seven permanent enrolment Centres – four in Puducherry, two in Karaikal and one in Mahe have been set up in Common Service Centres to facilitate the public for Aadhaar enrolment and updation.
