Nine persons including a policeman were killed in a militant attack in Marina El Alamein of Marsa Matrouh governorate, North of Egypt, the Ministry of Interior said.

The incident started when militants targeted a police vehicle and opened fire on security forces. The vehicle then exploded, killing policeman Tarek Mohamed Sameh and four conscripts, according to a statement issued from the Egyptian Ministry of Interior on Tuesday.

The militants later escaped in their car but the armed forces besieged them in front of Gate 6 of Marina resort, and an exchange of fire ensued, in which the four militants were killed, the statement said.

The road between Gate 4 to Gate 7 was blocked in Marina and a large number of troops are being deployed.

Investigations are going on to identify the militants, the statement added.
