Observing that there is increasing turbulence in the global and regional security environment, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, said on Saturday that terrorist attacks in Pathankot and Uri indicated the “troubled times we live in”.
“The world today is in a flux and threats are no longer easy to identify. The terrorist attacks on Pathankot Air base and Uri Army base are stark reminders of the troubled times we live in,” Mr. Raha said addressing the Indian Air Force at Hindon Air Force Station on the occasion of its 84th raising day.
To counter sub-conventional threats to bases, several new security measures have been instituted. New courses were being conducted with increased security training, consciousness, physical fitness and combat efficiency of the personnel, he said.
The IAF was established as an auxiliary under the British empire on October 8, 1932. To commemorate the day, the IAF put on an impressive air display with a mix of cutting edge and vintage aircraft.
The display began with flag-bearing skydivers of the Akash Ganga team para-dropping from An-32 transport aircraft.
The indigenous light combat aircraft Tejas, which was formally inducted into the IAF in July, carried out manoeuvres, the first since its induction.
While the Su-30MKI performed its signature manoeuvres, the Tiger Moth and Harvard vintage aircraft, which were restored to flying condition by the IAF, too took part in the parade. The display culminated with a performance by the Surya Kiran aerobatic team.
