Three school students in the age group of 10 to 12 years drowned in the village pond at Vaddikandriga, near Doravarisatram area, here on Sunday morning.

The deceased children were identified as Jaya Krishna belonging to athge, near Anepudi village, and Venkata Hemanth and Rakesh belonging to surrounding villages.

They went out to enjoy swimming as it was a holiday. But they were trapped in the muddy undergrowth in a pit dug up in the pond during last season for taking out soil.

Their bodies have been taken out of the pit and handed over to their family members. The pits dug up in local tanks and ponds for sand and soil are turning out to be death traps for the swimming enthusiasts many times in the rural areas.
