When they read the news in media that every drop of water in Latur in Maharashtra had dried up and people were suffering they could not digest the news.

The pain and grief moved them and they decided to extend their hand to villagers of Latur by supplying water through cans. They took the cue from Facebook and decided to do quench the thirst of villagers.

Members of the Rajamahendravaram Welfare Association (RWA), led by Sk. Subhan and Thota Lakshmi, read a posting on Facebook by Rajasekhar Chinta three weeks back that water could be sent to the villagers in cans by train. The revenue, police and railway officials would support the cause.

Sk. Basha, Bandla Sankar, CC Reddy Motors’ Prabhakar Reddy and others led by Ms. Thota Lakshmi and Mr. Subhan collected 1,500 litres of water in cans and started sending them by Shirdi Express on alternate days. Water sachets are also being sent.

3,000 litres

“We have started sending water with the support of passengers in II and III A/C and Sleeper Class. Then we increased number of cans day after day and now we are sending at least 3,000 litres of water every alternate day,” said Ms. Lakshmi.

Mr. Subhan said that after loading water from Rajamahendravaram he would inform his friends in Latur Road railway station about it and they would receive the same.

“In the beginning local railway, revenue and police helped our friends at Latur Road station and now villagers started coming to the station to get water directly from compartments.”

However, he was unhappy that some local vendors came early to the Latur station and took away water and sold it at Rs.10 per litre.

He said they would continue the service till it rained in Latur and the crisis ended.
