YSRC wins 7 Assembly segments in Nellore district

Updated - October 18, 2016 01:05 pm IST - NELLORE:

The YSR Congress established a firm hold by winning seven out of the 10 Assembly constituencies in Nellore district while the Telugu Desam Party ended up victorious in three constituencies.

The YSRC won in Sullurupeta, Gudur, Kavali, Nellore City, Nellore Rural, Sarvepalli and Atmakur Assembly segments. The TDP emerged victorious in Udayagiri, Kovur and Venkatagiri segments.

Former Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy gave a tough fight to YSRC nominee Kakani Govardhan Reddy in Sarvepalli but eventually the latter won with a majority of 5,446 votes. Though Mr. Chandramohan Reddy entered the fray considerably late, his election managers could quickly get a hold on the segment but it was not enough to outsmart the rival.

YSRC nominees Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy and Mekapati Gowtham Reddy won in the Nellore Rural and Atmakur Assembly constituencies with impressive majorities of 25,653 votes and 31,412 votes respectively. Their margins were expected to come down in the wake of the Modi-Pawan Kalyan visit but they retained their strong footing based on local factors.

TDP nominee Kurugondla Ramakrishna retained his standing in Venkatagiri by taking a lead over YSRC nominee in Venkatagiri town in the last few rounds.

Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy’s brother Mekapati Chandrasekhara Reddy had to accept defeat at the hands of TDP’s Bollineni Venkata Rama Rao in Udayagiri. Here, the TDP won over YSRC with the help of a sympathy vote and also anti-incumbancy factor against the sitting candidate.
