There was no cross-verification of data before announcing the ranking of educational institutions by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on Monday. The data used for evaluation was submitted by the institutions themselves and the National Institutes Ranking Framework (NIRF) makes it clear, on its website itself, that the responsibility for accuracy and authenticity of the data lies with the respective institutions.
“The National Bureau of Accreditation had checked for data inconsistencies but has not conducted verification,” R. Subramanyam, Secretary, MHRD, told The Hindu .
The evaluation was done based on five broad parameters.
Every institute has been assigned an overall rank as well as ranking based on individual parameters.
Engineering institutions While the IITs dominate the overall ranking in engineering institutions — with five oldest IITs at Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur and Kanpur placed at top — so is not the case under individual parameters. Under teaching, learning and resources, three new IITs are in top 5, with IIT Ropar, IIT Indore and IIT Mandi placed at first, third and fifth positions respectively.
IIT BHU is placed on top for graduation outcome parameter (based on placements, mean salary for employment and performance in public/university examinations).
While older IITs are anecdotally known to have the best placement records, none of them features in top 10. Interestingly, nine of the top 20 institutes for this parameter don’t fall in the overall top 100 list of engineering institutions. M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, Bengal Institute of Technology and Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering, Pune, are placed at second, third and fifth positions for this parameter. Surprisingly, IIT Delhi, with an overall rank of 4, is placed at 78th position. For research, the oldest IITs occupy the top 5 positions.
Management institutions Under teaching, learning and resources, IIM Bangalore leads the way.
It is interesting to note that the MBA department of IIT Kanpur and Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal are placed over IIM Ahmedabad under this parameter.
No other IIM features in top 10, while in overall list, 7 of them make it to top 10.
The Management Development Institute, which has an overall rank of 11, leads the way under graduation outcome parameter, followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Ahmedabad.
IIMs dominate the research parameter, occupying 6 of the top 7 places.
