The Special CBI Court, which is hearing the Bellary illegal mining cases, granted bail to retired IAS officer M. Shamim Banu here on Monday.
Ms. Banu, who has been accused of overlooking violations committed by the Deccan Mining Syndicate when she was a senior functionary in the Commerce and Industries Department, was remanded in judicial custody by the court on September 7.
The bail was granted to her under Section 437 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which provides for relaxation to women in cases where they have been incarcerated under non-bailable sections.
The custody of other accused in the case — M. Vishwanath, former Principal Secretary of the Commerce and Industries, S.K. Raju, former Deputy Director, Mines and Geology, and Hospet police inspector Ramakant Y. Hullar, Deccan Mining Syndicate CEO Ritesh Milapchand Jain and Managing Director Rajendra Kumar Jain — has been extended up to September 21.
