The Annual Day and awards ceremony of Kasturba Medical College was held at the KMC Greens on Manipal University campus here on Saturday.
A press release here on Monday said, National Research Scholar M.S. Valiathan, who was also the first Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University, said that medicine was a long journey and outgoing graduates had many peaks to scale in the coming years.
Dr. Valiathan warned the future doctors of the difficult clinical and ethical questions that they would face in their careers. A large number of them were related to patient care and many related to practice and institutions.
“Suppose, you are a cardiac surgeon in a big hospital and you have been told to do 15 coronary bypass surgeries every week. If you go by global guidelines, you can only do 10 per week. Would you dilute your criteria and still continue doing those 15 surgeries, or, would you rather forgo your attachment to that hospital?” he asked.
In concluding, Dr. Valiathan said, “The practice of medicine in the 21st century will rest on a tripod — where one leg is science and technology, the second is medical economics and the third is medical ethics. This is a fact, and if all these three pillars are equally strong and balanced, the tripod will be stable and your professional lives will be successful.”
Rachna Shenoy bagged the Best Outgoing Student Award for 2014-15. K. Ramnarayan, Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, was present.
