Syed Waqas, who was picked up along with four other students by the cyber police at Vasanthnagar in Bangalore on Sunday for allegedly circulating an anti-Modi MMS, seems to have become a victim of an incorrect cellphone number provided by the complainant.
Superintendent of Police Chandragupta told The Hindu here on Monday that preliminary investigation provided no evidence against Waqas.
The complainant, RTI activist Jayant Tinaikar from Khanapur in Belgaum district, gave the wrong number to the police.
Since a case had been registered against Waqas, further investigation would be carried out to trace the origin of the MMS, Dr. Chandragupta said.
Meanwhile, the Khanapur police team, headed by Circle police inspector Mahanteshwar Jiddi, interrogated Waqas at the Nadgad police station. But they could find no evidence to show his involvement in sending the MMS, Dr. Chandragupta said.
He said that Mr. Tinaikar saw the MMS and used his own understanding to trace the cellphone number and hurried to lodge a complaint.
Much before lodging a complaint, he had informed a section of media in Bangalore, he said.
Cellphone seizedThe Khanapur police have seized the complainant’s cellphone as well.
