The Mysuru division of South Western Railway (SWR) has taken the ‘green’ route by launching a plan to distribute LED bulbs to its employees across 12 districts coming under its jurisdiction.

The division observed ‘Energy Conservation Day’ and is also observing ‘Energy Conservation Week’ from December 14 to 20.

On the occasion, Rajkumar Lal, Divisional Railway Manager, SWR, Mysuru, handed over energy efficiency 9-watt LED bulb to D.Soundararajan, Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer, SWR, Mysuru, as a symbolic gesture.

Affordable rates

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lal said the scheme to provide high-quality LED bulbs to domestic consumers at an affordable rate in about 100 cities across the country, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently. This scheme was now being made available to railway employees also, he said.

Mr. Lal distributed 9-watt bulbs to several railway employees on the occasion.

He said the scheme, being implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL) under the Ministry of Power, would save energy substantially, thereby reducing the energy bill of each household as also the energy load on the railway system.

Till now, through sustained efforts in non-conventional sources of energy, the Mysuru division of SWR was able to save 3.95 lakh units of energy valued at Rs. 23.71 lakh in the current financial year.

There are more than 33,000 railway employees across 12 districts coming under the Mysuru division. A unit has been established at the Mysuru office to distribute the bulbs.

Each bulb is sold at a subsidised cost of Rs. 100. Even the Mysuru railway station has eco-friendly initiatives for its energy needs by shifting to LED bulbs, he said.

Also, there is a plan to encourage those staying in 500 railway quarters here to switch over to the LED bulbs to save energy.
