As many as 2,366 applications have been received till date for admissions to LKG and Class 1 under the Right to Education (RTE) Act in Udupi district. The last date for submission of applications is March 22 (Tuesday).
Diwaker Shetty, Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), told reporters on Thursday that the number of applications has decreased from last year. He said this is because of a change in rules that stipulates that those from on area a particular village habitation have to choose a school in that habitation only. In the case of a city, the applicants have to choose a school from the municipal ward where he or she resides or a nearby ward.
According to the figures provided by the Department of Public Instruction, the number of students applying for LKG admission in unaided schoolstill March 17, 2016, was 2,298. This included 783 in Udupi education block, 393 in Kundapur block, 246 in Karkala block, 558 in Byndoor block and 316 in Brahmavar block.
Till Thursday, only 68 students had applied for admissions to Class 1 — 42 in Byndoor education block, six in Brahmavar block, 18 in Karkala block and two in Udupi block, Mr. Shetty said.
