Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the government is committed to achieving total literacy in the State and so it has introduced schemes like Ksheera Bhagya, midday meal, free shoes, free text books and incentives to girl children for attending classes.

Inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of JSS Residential High School in Suttur in Nanjangudu taluk on Monday, Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the State government emphasised on primary education.

“As per recent statistics made available to the government, there is 87 per cent of literacy in the State. We want to achieve total literacy in the next two years,” he said. There will be more thrust on female literacy in the State, he said.

The Chief Minister said that rural children must also be provided with quality education like urban children. Only then can equality be achieved, he said.

The Chief Minister called upon the teachers to inculcate scientific reasoning and secular feelings among children and mould them in a proper way. Mr. Siddaramaiah commended the Suttur Mutt for setting up many educational institutions and hospitals apart, from conducting religious activities.

He said that the mutt was responsible for thousands of people getting higher education besides quality healthcare facilities. He also recalled the services of Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swami. V. Srinivas Prasad, Minister for Revenue and district in-charge, said that the mutt had provided education to all particularly to the oppressed since many decades.

Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swami spoke on the occasion.
