New driving licence to have security features

Using web application ‘Sarathi’ of MoRTH

The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has rolled out new driving licences with a host of security features using the web application ‘Sarathi’ of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for issuing uniform driving licences in the country.

Instead of the laminated paper card being issued as driving licences in the State, the motorists will now get PVC cards without additional cost. QR code, hot-stamped hologram, Guillochepattern, Microlines, golden national emblem, and Micro Test with International error are the new features.

The new driving licence in the pvc card form was launched by the Transport Commissioner, K. Padmakumar at the high-level meeting of MVD officials at the Transport Commissionerate here on Wednesday. The new licence will be issued to those who have cleared the test using the Sarathi software under the Regional Transport Offices of Kudappanakkunnu in Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha and Sub-RTO at Karunagapally initially.

Pilot phase

Mr. Padmakumar told The Hindu that the MVD would go for smart card driving licences in the State if the pilot phase rolled out now at three offices was found to be successful.

Joint Transport Commissioner and Secretary, STA, Rajeev Puthalath said the MVD was gearing up to centralise issuance of driving licences to all classes of motorists in the State to avoid middle men and to ensure speedy delivery and transparency.

Once motorists clear the driving test and formalities are completed, the licence will be printed in Thiruvananthapuram on getting approval from the field officer and despatched on the same day by post. The new driving licence will reach the doorstep of the motorist on the second day, he added.
