The Youth Congress couriered plantain stems to Cliff House, the official residence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, on Friday after he criticised their mode of protest against the murder of two of their activists in Kasaragod.

On Wednesday, the organisation had taken out a protest march to the Kerala Sahitya Akademi with plantain stems, against the ‘silence’ of Left-leaning cultural leaders over the double murders, and Mr. Vijayan had objected to their action.

The activists alleged that cultural leaders, who write poems and stories on every other issue, were mum on the murders.

They said the cultural leaders pledged their ‘freedom of expression’ at AKG Centre. They placed plantain stems on the car of the akademi president and tied stems over the board of the akademi.

“Actually, we committed a mistake. Instead of taking the protest march with plantain stems to the akademi, we should had gone to Cliff House first,” wrote Thrissur District Congress Committee general secretary John Daniel in reply to a Facebook post of Mr. Vijayan criticising the Youth Congress protest.

Case registered

Meanwhile, the police have registered cases against 10 Youth Congress workers, including Mr. Daniel and Youth Congress State secretary Sunil Lalur, in connection with the protest at the akademi. The cases were registered after the Chief Minister criticised the agitation on Facebook. Many left organisations have come with strong protest against the agitation.
