Border Security Force personnel allegedly shot dead a 25-year-old woman at a border location in Tripura on Friday after she resisted rape. The incident occurred at Tarapukur in Sonamura, some 50km south of Agartala, at around 1p.m.

The family of the victim lodged a complaint against two BSF riflemen who allegedly sprayed bullets at the young housewife named Maya Khatun. Authorities deployed Tripura State Rifles personnel in the area after local residents staged protests against the killing.

“We have just reached hospital with the corpse. We have seen four bullet injury marks in her body, but details will be known after inquest”, Amal Chakraborty, Officer in Charge of Sonamura police station, told the Hindu over phone.

He said victim’s husband Billal Husain and others complained that two BSF men fired their automatic weapons after she resisted rape attempt. She died instantly.

The murder occurred on the road, 7 meters from her home. Most of men in the locality were away in mosque to perform Friday prayers.

The BSF men ran to their barrack immediately after the incident. A senior police official said BSF authorities will be asked to produce them in the police station and face investigation.

Senior BSF officials also visited the spot. The border force has launched a separate inquiry into the horrific incident.
