Five fishermen of Nagapattinam district whose boat reportedly strayed into Sri Lankan waters a few days ago have been remanded in the island nation.
Fisheries Department gave their names as B. Machavallavan, V. Rajaiah, M. Mariappan, A. Munian — all from Vilunthamavadi village and V. Murugesan from Thottakudi.
The five set sail on a country boat for fishing a few days ago from Vilunthamavadi. Heavy rains and wind caused the engine to develop a snag and the boat is said to have strayed into Sri Lankan waters. A senior official said the five were taken to Velvettithurai for interrogation and subsequently remanded after being produced in a court. Information regarding the remand of the five fishermen came to the department on Friday, the official said.
