‘Have concern for environment, energy’

Updated - March 24, 2016 03:36 pm IST - SALEM:

Scholars and academicians should have concern for environment and energy and take more initiatives on these disciplines, said C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University.

At the inaugural of the seminar on ‘sustainable energy resources’ brought up by the Department of Energy Studies in connection with the National Energy Conservation Day here on Monday, Mr. Swaminathan said that energy manifested itself in different forms and played a central role in the overall development of the country.

Promoting research

The university set up a Department of Energy Studies last year to promote more research on energy studies, he said.

The emerging trends and technologies that promote sustainable energy included renewable energy sources, such as hydroelectricity, solar energy, wind energy, wave power, geothermal energy, bio-energy, tidal power designed to improve energy efficiency.

Students and scholars ought to put their efforts to be familiar with these subjects and must contribute to tap sustainable energy and energy efficiency projects through research, the Vice-Chancellor said.

V. Krishnakumar, dean of Sciences and Head in-charge, Department of Energy Studies, explained the objectives of the seminar.

R. Sethumadhavan, professor of Institute for Energy Studies, spoke on the role of individual contribution towards environment and energy.

Energy conservation was using less energy by avoiding wastage.

Using energy efficiently was necessary to save it for the future.

Sessions

In the technical sessions that followed, Mr. Sethumadhavan spoke on ‘renewable energy and energy conservation’, N. Lakshminarasimhan, scientist, Functional Materials Division, Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi, spoke on ‘dye sensitised solar cells’ and V. Manoj Kumar, solar professional trainer and consultant, National Institute of Renewable Energy Technology, Salem, presented a paper on ‘recent trends in solar energy’.
