Narendra Modi-led Union Government should vote against the Britain-sponsored new resolution on Sri Lanka at United Nations Human Rights Council that tends to give the island nation time to address the alleged human rights violations, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has said.

Mr. Vaiko, who launched his State-wide anti-liquor crusade at Kalingapatti in the district on Tuesday, said: “If the Modi-led administration decides either to support or stay neutral on this resolution, I will be forced to campaign against it...”

Sri Lankan Army brutally killed the heads of the families to leave over 90,000 widows at the end of the war. Teenage girls were sexually assaulted by the soldiers, he said.

“After killing five of his bodyguards in front of his eyes, the army mercilessly shot dead Prabhakaran’s 9-year-old son Balachandran. The methodical cleansing of the Tamils was unleashed with the support of the UPA government, in which the DMK and the PMK were sharing power. Hence I campaigned against the UPA constituents. The Modi-led Centre should not commit the same mistake of supporting Sri Lanka, and should vote against the resolution,” Mr. Vaiko said.

He lauded Kalingapatti residents’ battle for closure of the liquor outlet in the village and the resolution passed by the panchayat for permanent closure of the TASMAC outlet.

“When the Supreme Court heard the State government’s appeal challenging the closure of the liquor shop, it endorsed the views of the High Court based on the resolution passed by Kalingapatti panchayat. We’ve showed a viable legal solution to end liquor menace... After the end of the local body elections, every local body should pass a resolution against liquor shops,” Mr. Vaiko said.

While appealing to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to expedite anti-seemai karuvelam drive, he urged him to allow farmers and villagers to take silt deposited in dry waterbodies during the ‘kudimaramaththu’ for agricultural purposes.
