DMK will emerge unscathed from 2G case: Karunanidhi

Updated - August 21, 2016 04:15 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Brushing aside questions raised by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Jayalalithaa in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation case, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday said it would not be legally appropriate to answer them in detail.

In a statement here, Mr. Karunanidhi said the AIADMK leader had raised several questions as though she were a seasoned lawyer, but as the 2G case was before the courts, it would not be proper to answer them.

However, in reply to one of her questions – regarding the source of funds for starting Kalaignar TV, he said he had already disclosed in 2008 itself that his wife Dayalu Ammal had received Rs.100 crore by giving up her 20 per cent stake in Sun TV.

“I had explained even then how the money was divided among family members,” he added.

Ms. Jayalalithaa had raised questions concerning the source of funds for investments by Ms. Dayalu Ammal and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi in Kalaignar TV and why a Mumbai-based real estate company chose to invest in a just-launched Chennai-based television channel.

Defending the recent resolution passed by his party's high-level committee, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president said the observations contained in it regarding a concerted media campaign against his party, aimed at creating a wedge between the DMK and Congress, were quite true and were borne out by articles appearing in some newspapers.

Mr. Karunanidhi maintained that different figures were being suggested by various quarters as the quantum of supposed loss to the government due to 2G spectrum allocation, but nobody was able to quantify it with any certainty.

“It needs no great proof to show that based on this notional loss, some newspapers and politicians like Ms. Jayalalithaa are trying to magnify this matter with the ulterior motive of isolating the DMK in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA),” he said.

Repeating his charge that the AIADMK leader was seeking innumerable adjournments to prolong the ‘disproportionate assets' case against her being tried in a Bangalore court, Mr. Karunanidhi said, “Unlike Ms. Jayalalithaa, the DMK will adopt legal means and emerge unscathed from the case.
