Tension prevailed for sometime on Wednesday morning near the Kendriya Vidyalayas at Kalpakkam following rumours that bombs have been planted in the premises of educational institutions.
However, thorough checking of the schools by the Kancheepuram district police had revealed that the threat was nothing but a hoax.
PTI adds:
Central security and police personnel went into a tizzy on Wednesday following receipt of a letter stating that a bomb had been planted in a school at Kalpakkam housing the high-security nuclear complex, over 50 km from here, but it turned out to be a hoax.
“There was a communication that a bomb was planted in the township in Kalpakkam. We conducted a through check with CISF, state police, bomb defusing squads and sniffer dogs. It turned out to be a hoax,” a spokesperson at Kalpakkam nuclear power complex said.
Kalpakkam nuclear complex houses Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Madras Atomic Power Station and Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor and other nuclear facilities controlled by the Department of Atomic Energy.
Police in Kancheepuram district, where the nuclear complex is located, said a letter was received at Kalpakkam post-office on Tuesday evening, merely addressed IGCAR, stating that a bomb would be placed in the Kendriya Vidyalaya school premises.
The seal was smudged and so the date or origin of the letter could not be traced. However, police searched premises of the Central schools in the area but no explosives were found, police said.
Worried parents thronged the schools as the news spread but they were assured that there was no need for panic and the bomb threat was a hoax.
Police pickets have been posted around Kalpakkam, sources added.
