World Buddhist Council condemns Taliban action
TAIPEI, MARCH 3. The World Buddhist Sangha Council today
condemned the destruction of Buddhist art by Afghan's Taliban
rulers, calling it ``heinous criminal behaviour'' which is
``despised by both man and God.'' In a letter to the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO), the Council said the Taliban Government has issued an
edict to destroy invaluable cultural and religious objects, in
the pretext of establishing a pure Islamic State.
``This heinous criminal behaviour has aroused condemnation from
the whole world,'' the letter said. ``We express strong objection
and condemnation regarding this action of destroying the Buddhist
heritage of more than 2,000 years. We appeal to UNESCO to take
action.''
