Arrack seized: three held
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MARCH 3. An autorickshaw loaded with 3000 arrack sachets
was seized by the Flower Bazaar police today and three persons
including a woman were arrested in this connection.
The DCP (Flower Bazaar), Mr. Shakeel Akhter, said that during a
vehicle check at Vyasarpadi, a police team intercepted an
autorickshaw transporting three plastic containers concealed in
gunny bags. On inspection, it was found to contain arrack
sachets, smuggled in from Bangalore.
The driver of the autorickshaw and a youth accompanying the
consignment were arrested. Based on their confession, a woman for
whom the arrack sachets were being transported was also arrested.
Mr. Akhter said that preliminary investigation revealed that the
sachets had been smuggled to the city by lorries transporting
vegetables to Koyambedu. From this point, the arrack sachets were
transported to other destinations in fish carts and other modes
of transport.
Police suspect the smuggling racket to have a wider ramification
and further investigation is in progress.
