DMK to implead itself in PIL against Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI, JULY 18. Raising its level of action on the legal front against the AIADMK Government in the wake of the Karunanidhi arrest episode, the DMK will implead itself in the public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court challenging Ms. Jayalalithaa's appointment as Chief Minister despite her conviction in the TANSI land deal case.

Disclosing this here today, the DMK president and former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, did not expect this decision to affect the party ``politically''. ``Once an issue goes to court then all those concerned are bound by its verdict,'' he said.

Underscoring that beyond the Supreme Court no appellate fora were available and everyone ``will have to bow to its verdict'', Mr. Karunanidhi told reporters to queries on this issue that the question of the DMK pressing the Centre to expedite the PIL would not arise.

``It is purely a court matter and how can the Centre issue a directive to that effect?'' Mr. Karunanidhi asked. But the DMK's lawyers in the course of the arguments could explore available legal avenues to seek expediting the case, he added.

To another query, Mr. Karunanidhi said he expected the Centre to appoint a new Governor for Tamil Nadu soon.
