Case against police chief for Aug. 1
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JULY 18. A Division Bench of the Madras High Court today
posted hearing in a contempt case against the Commissioner of
Police, Mr. Muthu Karuppan, and an Inspector to August 1, as one
of the defendants sought more time to file counter.
The Bench comprising Mr. Justice Jayasimha Babu and Mr. Justice
Gnanaprakasam also dispensed with the personal appearance of Mr.
Muthu Karuppan ``for the time being.''
In his complaint, Mr. Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, former Deputy Speaker
of the Assembly, had stated that the Inspector of Vepery police
station, Mr. Rajendra Kumar, had misrepresented certain facts
before the vacation judge, Mr. Justice A. Packiaraj, and got an
exparte interim stay against his bail on May 24.
Arrested on May 17 in connection with a poll violence case, Mr.
Ilamvazhuthi was granted bail by the Principal Sessions Judge,
Mr. S. Ashok Kumar, on May 23.
But, the prosecution obtained an interim stay on the bail order,
stating that the XIV Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, had granted
police custody of Mr. Ilamvazhuthi.
When Mr. Ilamvazhuthi's counsel moved the MM Court for copy
application, he was informed that neither was such custody sought
nor granted by the court. Following this, he filed a criminal
contempt petition against the police officials.
