Variety and spice
From burgers and rotis to noodles, lasagna and Thai fare, Chefs serves up a dynamic menu.
OUT HERE in Kudlaland, what would you do if your family is keen on dining out but each member wants something different to dig into? Son wants pizzas, mother wants dal-chawal, wife wants Chinese, and while your own taste buds want some cheese-rich pasta?
Fret not; just head for Chefs, the contemporary restaurant on Kadri-Nantoor Road. With a versatile spread in their kitchen, Chefs is a connoisseur's delight. Right from footlongs to lasagne, with tandoor and pasta thrown in, the moment one opens the menu, there is still more confusion as to what to go for because everything looks oh-so-delectable. Chefs has been around for 12 years, and what back then started off as just a burger joint, is now phenomenal.
"We started serving different kinds of burgers and most of our customers were college students. At that time, burgers in Mangalore were a novelty," says Vijay Lobo, one of the two partners who run the show at Chefs.
The basement beneath Chefs houses their Chinese restaurant, Xin-Lai. It serves only Chinese and Thai fare, while Chefs serves Italian, north Indian and fast food. But the Chinese dishes can also be ordered upstairs, and that's what makes Chef so special. It is so flexible that when you order a pizza or a platter of lasagne, you can have your choice of fillings to go with it.
Lobo credits his choice of cuisines at Chefs to his partner, Eugene Lee. "Lee has a good sense of food, and knows what sells and what does not, besides also having good taste. He is the one who adds or subtracts choices from the menu here," says Lobo.
There are some unusual dishes not easily available in other restaurants here. For example the Thai pizza, a delicious cheese-free pizza with peanut butter and tomato puree topped with sesame seeds and garlic-flavoured mushrooms.
Other out-of-the-ordinary fare includes the mushroom chilli footlong, where button mushrooms chillied and spiced form the filling with the footlong, which is topped with cheddar cheese. Italian cuisine freaks could try the pasta in bologna sauce or vegetable sauce. You can also dig into pasta dipped in tomato sauce or mushroom and cream sauce or even Italian meat sauce. To spice up an otherwise bland Italian fare, Chefs has additions such as the garlic salami lasagne and the chilli chicken lasagne, both spicy and inviting.
Sizzlers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian burgers, a variety of pizzas, north Indian fare, you name it and they have it. What's more, Chefs even has home delivery all through Mangalore.
"People who can't make it can just call us and order," says Lobo. The Chefs outlet at Mannagudda deals with the parcel orders.
"Chefs is perhaps the only place that serves such good pasta in town. There are other places, but they are all star hotels, where we students don't even think of stepping into thanks to their prices," says Geetanjali, a student. So the next time you're feeling lazy and just want to sit at home and go crazy over a bowl of pasta, just dial Chefs on 2216404/505.
