Wrap a light meal

TUCK IN: Colourful interiors of the newly opened Chicking outlet at Palarivattom

YELLOW AND red, both happy, bright colours. Wherever you look, at the Chicking outlet just opened at Palarivattom, you will find yellows and reds, be it the uniform of the staff members, their hats, the menu, the wrappers, tables or the walls. Through the huge glass walls, you see amidst these colours, chicken and chicken; nuggets, pieces hidden inside burgers, plates of potato coloured boneless fried pieces, Mexican sauces and special salad combos to go with them.

The greens peeping out from the Mexican wrap (the wrap is a chapathi) with chicken pieces dripping sauces and red tomato slices nestling among them sure makes it inviting. It is priced at Rs 59. Eaten with French fries and Mexican sauce, it makes a handsome meal.

"The outlet on MG Road proved to be so popular that we opened another here, in the suburbs," says A. K. Mansoor, Managing Director of the Al Bayan group of companies, which owns the Chicking brand now. Apart from the Gulf countries, there is an outlet in Chennai and a few more are to be opened in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kozhikode, he says.

For all kinds

There's something for every kind of tummy, small, medium or really big. The family Special, (Rs. 429) has 12 pieces of chicken, 6 buns and 2 coleslaws. If you are a vegetarian, then go for the vegetable wrap, (Rs. 33) with fresh vegetables. If fish is your favourite, tuck in tuna wrap (Rs 45). Care for prawns? Then it's prawn wrap (Rs. 59) of course.

The curry and rice vegetarian type can opt for a package of rice, vegetable gravy and five pieces of vegetable nuggets for Rs 59. Rice with one piece chicken and three chicken nuggets come at Rs 65.

The are many other combinations with chicken on centre stage, French fries playing accompaniments.

Kiddies

For children, there's this Rs 69-package having a kid burger, juice and French fries. The play pen will keep the kids not interested in food happy, while their parents enjoy chicken.

"It is halal chicken and comes from Udumalpet," Mansoor explains.

The kitchen is an interesting place with electronic bells announcing that the chicken is done. The steel containers with boiling oil rest on specially designed ovens. "The oil is drained in a custom built gadget, so the food is not unhealthy," says Mansoor. The special ingredients in the Chicking menus which give it that exclusivity are imported and kept a secret `which only my brother and I know,' according to Mansoor. (See box) Likewise the 6 mm French fries are cut in a specially designed gadget.

"Indian tastes are different from Western, so I did some research in my own kitchen and came out with these improved recipes, which have been a hit in my outlets," Mansoor beams. So, the bland chicken in the old style comes with a trace of chilly, though minus masala, palatable to Indian palates.
